Memo to Members Regarding 2023 Bylaw Changes

On March 15th, DMAR held a membership meeting where proposed updates to our Association's Bylaws were presented to members and voted on.

Dear Member,

On March 15th, DMAR held a membership meeting where proposed updates to our Association's Bylaws were presented to members and voted on.

The changes that were approved are as follows:

  1. The title of leadership positions changed from Chair to President, Chair-Elect to President-Elect and Vice Chair to Treasurer. RATIONALE FOR CHANGE: To align with titles used by the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) and Colorado Association of Realtors® (CAR) as well as other local Associations throughout the country, thus increasing consistency and decreasing any confusion.

  2. The terms of leadership for DMAR's Board of Directors and Committee members have changed from a fiscal year (October 1 to September 30) to an elective year (December 1 to November 30). RATIONALE FOR CHANGE: To align with the elective years for NAR and CAR. Please note, the fiscal year will still apply to membership dues collection.

  3. DMAR’s five Districts (North, South/East, West, Central and Douglas Elbert) have been replaced by four Regions (North East, North West, South East and South West). RATIONALE FOR CHANGE: The District concept was created after the mergers of JCAR, DBR, NMDRA and DERA to allow the Association to operate as a single entity and to retain a measure of local identity. This concept provided an opportunity to build community among members based on small geographic areas. As DMAR has grown, we believe a regional structure based on zip codes will better serve our members while preserving the goals of the original District concept.

  4. The way the Board of Directors are elected has changed, allowing members to vote on all positions instead of voting based on their assigned District. RATIONALE FOR CHANGE: In the past, it has been a challenge to secure even one, let alone, two qualified candidates for each position. On the other hand, the Nominating Committee has also had to reject qualified candidates because too many candidates were within the same District. With the District structure changed to Regions, the Nominating Committee will not be limited to selecting candidates from certain geographic areas and will have the freedom to select the best candidate(s) for each open position.
