Housing market inventory is starting to recover
Housing starts jumped in March, recovering from a bleak February that included wild winter storms in the South, according to a recent report from the Census Bureau. Single-family housing starts rose 15.3% over the month to a pace of 1.24 million annualized units. That’s up 37% from a year ago, but it’s important to take into account that the COVID-19 virus first took hold of the housing market in March 2020, said Doug Duncan, chief economist at Fannie Mae. New-Home Construction Rebounds as America Faces Dire Housing Shortage
New-home construction surged after winter weather had caused a slowdown in February, at a time when the housing market desperately needs more inventory to meet burgeoning demand from first-time buyers. U.S. homebuilders started construction on homes at a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 1.74 million in March, representing a 19% jump from the previous month’s upwardly-revised figure, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Wednesday. Mortgage rates drop below 3% again — offering opportunities to buyers and homeowners
The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.97% for the week ending April 8, down seven basis points from the previous week, Freddie Mac FMCC, reported Thursday. The rate on the 30-year loan has fallen 20 basis points since reaching the highest level since June of last year back at the end of March. Read More
