2015 was another successful advocacy year for DMAR and we are proud of our members, committees and community leaders for helping us achieve major advocacy successes.
Check out these three advocacy successes in 2015
DMAR’s Government Affairs Committee and staff played an integral role in promoting and successfully pushing the passage of local construction defects ordinances in Arvada, Commerce City, Denver and Wheat Ridge. DMAR was especially pleased with Denver taking on such reforms when the State Legislature has been unwilling to do so during the past three legislative sessions. Denver’s construction defects ordinance, which passed by a vote of 12 in favor/1 opposed, includes important provisions that give property owners the information and choice they deserve when their unit may be impacted by a class-action, construction defects lawsuit. In late 2015, Denver City Council overwhelmingly voted down two “hostile” or non-owner landmark designations in West Denver. Although DMAR does not get involved with landmark designations on a case-by-case basis, the Association generally does not support landmark designation applications submitted without property owner consent. This position was an important point of discussion during DMAR’s candidate interview process and the dividends of those interviews and endorsements were demonstrated in these failed hostile designation attempts.
For the second year in a row, DMAR set a new record for REALTOR® Political Action Committee (RPAC) investments. The Association smashed its state and national goal of $130,000 by ultimately raising just shy of $150,000. To put things in perspective, the $150,000 invested is a 200% increase from DMAR’s RPAC totals in 2013.
Get involved DMAR’s advocacy efforts
We encourage you to become more involved in the Association’s advocacy efforts. Here are a few ways you can help protect property rights and promote homeownership:
JOIN DMAR’s GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (GAC)
The GAC meets the first Thursday of each month at 10 am to discuss local, state and national issues that impact the Real Estate industry. Committee content includes a variety of informative speakers including mayors, councilmembers, city managers and prominent developers. The GAC also reviews and takes policy positions on a variety of hot button topics such as affordable housing and zoning.

INVEST IN THE REALTORS® POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE (RPAC)
This is huge. In Colorado, your RPAC investments support elected officials who understand that an 8% tax on each and every one of your commissions would be detrimental to you and the real estate industry. This is just one of the many issues where RPAC serves as an investment in your livelihood.
